Visitors to Dominican Republican make up over 20% of Zika cases in US

Kaiser Health News (7/22, Galewitz) reports that “visitors to the Dominican Republic account for more than a fifth of the confirmed Zika cases in the U.S. through mid-July, according to data from state health departments.” According to Kaiser Health News, “in part, it reflects travel patterns between people living in the U.S. with family members in the Caribbean nation, public health officials say.”

Baby with Zika-related microcephaly born in New York City The New York Times (7/22, Santora, Subscription Publication) reported that “Health officials on Friday reported the first baby born in New York City with the Zika-related birth defect known as microcephaly.” New York City health commissioner Mary Bassett, MD, said, “While not surprising, given the travel trends of our global city, this case is a strong reminder of the tragic consequences of the Zika virus.” She said health officials “are monitoring the baby’s health closely and connecting the family with the necessary services to take care of their child.”

The AP (7/22, Velasquez) reports that NYC healthcare providers “have tested 2,000 pregnant women who have traveled to Zika-affected areas, and 41 of them have been confirmed to have the virus, health officials say.”
