CMS has announced that the Quality Reporting Communications Support Page will re-open beginning November 1, 2012, through January 31, 2013, to offer an additional opportunity for providers to apply for a hardship exemption to avoid the 2012 e-prescribing 1.5 percent payment adjustment on Medicare claims. The previous deadline to apply was June 30, 2012.
This adjustment will be applied to Medicare payments if a provider fails to use electronic prescription options during the reporting period. Hardship requests should be submitted via this website. At this time, all CMS hardship exemption requests will be final. This should ease the burden for some practices and provide adequate hardship exemptions for those unable to meet the program requirements. The CMS announcement also states that the hardship exemptions for the 2014 payment adjustment will be accepted at a separate time later in 2013.
