Each year in the United States, medication errors cause some 7,000
deaths. Illegible prescriptions, wrong dosing, and drug-drug or drug allergy
reactions are among the preventable causes of these deaths
and other adverse drug events (ADEs). The Center for Information
Technology Leadership estimates nationwide adoption of e-prescribing
would eliminate nearly 2.1 million ADEs and 1.3 million visits to physician
offices and more than 190,000 hospitalizations per year.

    Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

    • Describe how e-prescribing can improve patient safety by reducing
      medication errors,
    • Discuss the state and federal landscape of e-prescribing including
      legal barriers, and
    • Summarize what is needed for participation in the e-prescribing
component of the Physician Quality Reporting System developed by
the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
