AMS Welcomes 14 New Members

The physicians listed below have recently illustrated their commitment to improving health care in this community and our state by joining the Arkansas Medical Society.

“As society members, these physicians are part of a statewide network of over 4,000 Arkansas physicians, residents and medical students, dedicated to protecting the interests of their patients and improving the health of Arkansans,” said Society President, Omar Atiq, MD, of Pine Bluff.

“Some of the society’s most recent advocacy efforts include supporting the passage of the “Private Option” to extend private health insurance coverage to working families earning below 138% of poverty, advocating for responsible and practical reforms such as patient-centered medical homes and establishing a prescription drug monitoring program to combat abuse and diversion of prescription drugs. Other significant advances for Arkansas patients and physicians supported by AMS include establishing a statewide trauma system and passage of the Clean Indoor Air Act.”

The society has also successfully fought for passage of laws to protect motorists by initiating a graduated drivers’ license and placing restrictions on cell phone use while driving, funding tobacco prevention and cessation programs, funding cancer research, providing vision screening in schools, requiring health care facilities to provide emergency care to sexual assault victims, providing research funding and insurance coverage for colorectal cancer screening, and protecting an Arkansan’s right to choose their physician.
